What the Bible Actually Says About Praying for Healing
God Is Presented as a Healer
The Bible gives us many reasons to bring sickness to God.
Exodus 15:26 describes God as the One who heals. Psalm 103:2-3 calls God's people to remember that He forgives sins and heals diseases. Jeremiah 17:14 gives us the direct prayer, “Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed.”
These passages give Christians good biblical grounds for asking God for healing. They do not mean every verse should be turned into a guarantee that a particular person will recover at a particular time.
Prayer begins with God's character, not with a formula.
Jesus Healed the Sick
The Gospels contain many accounts of Jesus healing people. Matthew 8:16-17 describes Jesus healing the sick who were brought to Him and connects His ministry with Isaiah's prophecy. Mark 5 records Jairus coming to Jesus because his daughter was seriously ill.
The compassion of Jesus toward sick people is clear throughout the Gospels.
At the same time, the New Testament does not teach Christians to measure God's love by whether every illness disappears immediately. Paul himself prayed repeatedly about his "thorn in the flesh," yet the answer he received was, “My grace is sufficient for you” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
That gives us room to pray boldly without pretending that we control God's answer.
James 5 Gives a Pattern for Praying for the Sick
James 5:14-16 gives one of the clearest instructions in the New Testament concerning sickness. The sick person is told to call the elders of the church. The elders pray over the person and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 7
This is significant because healing prayer is presented as part of Christian community. Someone who is sick does not have to pray alone.
James also speaks about confession, prayer, and restoration within the church. The passage should not be used to tell every sick person that their illness must have been caused by a particular sin. The New Testament does not support such a simple connection.
What About Isaiah 53:5?
Isaiah 53:5 says, “by his wounds we are healed.” The immediate context is the suffering servant who bears the sins of others. The verse clearly speaks about transgression, iniquity, punishment, and peace.
Matthew 8:16-17 connects Jesus' healing ministry with Isaiah 53, while 1 Peter 2:24 also uses the passage in connection with Christ bearing our sins.
Christians can therefore pray Isaiah 53:5 when asking God for healing. But the verse should not be reduced to the claim that every Christian is guaranteed immediate physical healing in this present life. Its central message is tied to the saving work of Christ, while the New Testament also shows that believers continue to experience weakness, sickness, suffering, and death.
How to Pray for Healing When You Don't Know What to Say
You do not need a special formula.
Start with what is actually happening.
“Lord, I am sick.”
“Lord, this pain is getting difficult.”
“Lord, I am afraid about what the doctor may say.”
“Lord, please heal my child.”
Those are prayers.
Then ask specifically for what you want. Ask for healing. Ask for relief from pain. Ask for strength. Ask for wisdom for doctors. Ask for peace for your family.
You can also pray Scripture back to God. Jeremiah 17:14 gives you words when you cannot find your own words: “Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed.”
If the answer takes time, keep bringing the need to God. Paul did not hide the fact that he wanted his suffering removed. He asked repeatedly. Yet he also learned to depend on God's grace when the answer was different from what he requested.

What If Healing Doesn't Happen Right Away?
This can be one of the hardest parts of praying for healing.
You may pray sincerely and still wake up sick the next morning. You may pray for someone you love and watch the illness continue. You may ask for healing for months or years.
That does not automatically mean you failed to pray correctly.
It does not automatically mean you lacked faith.
It does not give anyone permission to blame you for being sick.
Paul's experience in 2 Corinthians 12 is important here. He pleaded with the Lord three times for his thorn to be taken away. The Lord's answer was not the removal Paul requested. Instead, Paul received the assurance that God's grace was sufficient and that Christ's power could be displayed through weakness.
That does not make sickness good. It does not mean you should stop asking for healing. It means Christian hope is larger than one particular physical outcome.

Keep asking.
Keep seeking wise medical care.
Keep talking with trusted Christians.
Ask God for strength when the answer has not come. Ask for wisdom about treatment. Ask for peace when fear becomes overwhelming. Ask for people who will help with meals, transport, appointments, finances, children, or simple daily tasks.
And do not turn someone else's illness into a spiritual accusation.
The Bible gives us examples of people who prayed for healing, people who were healed, and people who continued to suffer. Scripture gives us enough room to pray with real confidence while leaving the final answer in God's hands.
