Most of us learned to pray by asking. Asking for help, asking for healing, asking for direction. There's nothing wrong with that — God invites it. But worship is a different kind of prayer. It's the prayer that wants nothing back.
That's also what makes it hard. Sit down to worship and many of us run out of words in about ninety seconds. We say "You're great, God" a few times, and then our minds drift to the grocery list.
The 25 prayer points below were written for that moment. Each one gives you actual words to pray, and each one is anchored in a Bible verse so your worship is built on truth, not mood. They're grouped into five sections, so you can go straight to what fits your day — worshipping God for who He is, worshipping in spirit and truth, worshipping with your whole life, and worshipping in hard seasons.
What Makes a Worship Prayer Different
A worship prayer is prayer aimed at who God is rather than what you need from Him. Petition says, "Lord, please." Worship says, "Lord, You're worthy."
Jesus told the woman at the well that the Father is actively looking for this kind of praying: "Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks" (John 4:23, NIV). Notice what that verse says. God isn't waiting for better singing. He's seeking worshippers.
And worship was never meant to be polite and seated. "Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker" (Psalm 95:6, NIV). Bowing, kneeling, lifting hands — the Bible's worship is whole-person, because the God receiving it is worth the whole person.
Keep that in mind as you pray through these points. You're not performing. You're giving God what He's actually due.
Prayer Points for Worshipping God for Who He Is
Before you worship God for anything He's done, worship Him for who He is. These first seven points start there.
1. Prayer of reverence. "Lord, I bow before You this morning — not because I have to, but because You made me and You are worthy. Teach my body and my heart to worship You together." "Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker" (Psalm 95:6, NIV).
2. Prayer that God is worthy. "Father, You are worthy of glory and honor and power. You created all things, and by Your will they exist. My worship exists for the same reason — for You." "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being" (Revelation 4:11, NIV). This is the song being sung around the throne right now. When you pray it, you're joining something already in progress.
3. Prayer with your whole soul. "Lord, I don't want to worship You with just my lips. Let it rise from deep inside me — all that I am, praising Your holy name." "Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name" (Psalm 103:1, NIV).
4. Prayer giving God the glory due His name. "Father, I give You the glory that belongs to Your name. Not a portion of it. Not the leftovers of my attention. The glory due You." "Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him. Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness" (1 Chronicles 16:29, NIV).
5. Prayer for God's greatness beyond understanding. "Lord, Your greatness is more than I can take in. Let that humble me, not frustrate me. I worship a God bigger than my understanding." "Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom" (Psalm 145:3, NIV).
6. Prayer for God's faithfulness. "Lord, You are my God. I exalt You and praise Your name, because in perfect faithfulness You have done wonderful things — things You planned long ago, and things I'm still discovering." "Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done wonderful things, things planned long ago" (Isaiah 25:1, NIV).
7. Prayer in the splendor of His holiness. "Holy God, there is no one like You. Let the beauty of Your holiness stop me mid-sentence and turn my words into worship." "Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness" (Psalm 29:2, NIV).
Prayer Points for Worshipping God in Spirit and in Truth
Jesus set the standard in John 4 — worship that's real on the inside and true on the outside. These points pray toward that.
8. Prayer to be a true worshipper. "Father, You said You're seeking worshippers who worship in spirit and in truth. I want to be one of them. Search me, and make my worship genuine." "God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth" (John 4:24, NIV).
9. Prayer offering yourself. "Lord, I offer You my body as a living sacrifice. My hands, my voice, my time, my plans — this is my worship." "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God — this is your true and proper worship" (Romans 12:1, NIV). Paul is clear here: worship isn't only what happens when you sing. It's what happens when you surrender.
10. Prayer for a clean heart. "Create in me a pure heart, O God. I can't worship You rightly while I'm hiding things from You. Wash me, and renew a steady spirit in me." "Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me" (Psalm 51:10, NIV). David prayed this after his worst failure. It's a worship prayer for people who need mercy first.
11. Prayer with reverence and awe. "Lord, I'm receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken. So let me worship You with reverence and awe — thankful, and never casual about who You are." "Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe" (Hebrews 12:28, NIV).
12. Prayer with an undivided heart. "Lord my God, I praise You with all my heart. Not part of it. Gather up the scattered pieces of my attention and point them all at You. I will glorify Your name forever." "I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever" (Psalm 86:12, NIV).
13. Prayer that everything becomes worship. "Father, let even the ordinary parts of my day — eating, working, resting — be done for Your glory. Nothing in my life is too small to worship You with." "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31, NIV).
Prayer Points for Worshipping God with Your Whole Life
Worship that only happens in a prayer meeting isn't what the Bible describes. These points carry worship into Monday morning.
14. Prayer that your words and deeds worship. "Lord Jesus, whatever I do today — in word or deed — let me do it in Your name, giving thanks to the Father through You." "And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him" (Colossians 3:17, NIV).
15. Prayer for worship in your work. "Father, I work for You, not for people. Let the way I do my job today be an act of worship — wholehearted, honest, and excellent, because You're the one I'm serving." "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters" (Colossians 3:23, NIV).
16. Prayer that your walk worships. "Lord, You've shown me what is good: to act justly, to love mercy, to walk humbly with You. Let my obedience be my worship." "He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8, NIV).
17. Prayer for a renewed mind. "Father, don't let me be squeezed into the world's shape. Renew my mind, change how I think, and make my whole life a sacrifice You find pleasing." "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Romans 12:2, NIV).
18. Prayer for constant praise. "Lord, let praise stay on my lips — not just when I feel it. At all times. In traffic, in meetings, in the quiet before sleep. Your praise, always." "I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips" (Psalm 34:1, NIV).
19. Prayer that worships by the Spirit. "God, I worship by Your Spirit, and my confidence is in Christ Jesus — not in my performance, my record, or my effort. Thank You that worship rests on what He did, not what I do." "For it is we who are the circumcision, we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh" (Philippians 3:3, NIV).
Prayer Points for Worshipping God in Hard Seasons
Anyone can worship when the prayers get answered. The Bible's deepest worship often happened in the worst moments. These five points are for those days.
20. Prayer of worship with empty hands. "Lord, even if the fig tree doesn't bud and the fields produce nothing, I will rejoice in You. My joy isn't tied to my circumstances — it's tied to who You are." "Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines... yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior" (Habakkuk 3:17-18, NIV). Habakkuk wrote this facing national disaster. It's worship that costs something.
21. Prayer of worship at midnight. "Father, Paul and Silas sang hymns in a prison at midnight. If they could worship in chains, I can worship in this. Give me a song in my midnight." "About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them" (Acts 16:25, NIV). Notice who was listening. Worship in suffering preaches.
22. Prayer that talks back to your soul. "Why are you downcast, my soul? Put your hope in God. I will yet praise Him — my Savior and my God. I choose praise before I feel it." "Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God" (Psalm 42:11, NIV). Sometimes worship means preaching to yourself.
23. Prayer of worship in loss. "Lord, You gave, and You have taken away. I don't understand it, and it hurts. But blessed be Your name. I worship You in the pain, not instead of it." "The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised" (Job 1:21, NIV). Job worshipped after losing everything. The verse says he worshipped — then mourned. In that order.
24. Prayer that enters with thanksgiving. "Father, I enter Your gates with thanksgiving and Your courts with praise. Before I bring a single request, I bring gratitude. You are good, and Your love endures forever." "Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name" (Psalm 100:4, NIV).
25. Prayer for joy as strength. "Lord, Your word says the joy of the Lord is my strength. I'm weak today, so I worship You — and I ask that worship would become my strength." "Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength" (Nehemiah 8:10, NIV).
How to Use These Worship Prayer Points
A few simple suggestions, from experience.
Pray them out loud. Silent reading and spoken prayer land differently, and worship especially benefits from your actual voice. The Navigators suggest the same habit with their daily praise prayers — out loud, ideally with someone else.
Take one group per day for a week. Five groups, five days, and by the weekend you've worshipped God for His character, surrendered your life, praised Him in a hard place, and prayed for your church. That rhythm beats trying to pray all thirty in one sitting.
Make the words yours. These prayers are starting points, not scripts. If point 20 names a situation you're living in, stop there and pray it slowly in your own words. If a verse catches you, read the whole chapter around it.
Final Thoughts
Every other kind of prayer involves receiving something — an answer, direction, provision, peace. Worship is the one prayer where you give and ask for nothing. That's why it feels unfamiliar, and that's exactly why it matters.
The thirty points above won't make you a worshipper. Only time in God's presence does that. But they can get you through the door — words to start with, verses to stand on, and a path from "Lord, I need" to "Lord, You're worthy."
